  • The vast majority of adults have 28 teeth. This means that flossing the entire smile should only take a few minutes. Combined with brushing, you can help to clean your smile in about five minutes.
  • Secondly, you should use a gentle motion to move the floss in between the teeth. The goal is to remove bacteria, not to irritate your gums. (If you notice bleeding when flossing, it could be due to gingivitis, which is actually the first stage of gum disease. Periodontal therapy could be required to restore the gums’ health.)
  • Thirdly, you should be flossing at least once a day, to help promptly remove bacteria that could lead to cavities and also gum disease.
