Who doesn’t want to enjoy great oral health? Keeping the teeth and gums healthy is the first step to maintaining a beautiful smile. Sadly, dental cavities are incredibly common in both kids and adults, alike. Though they can often be treated through fast and effective restorative dentistry, it is even better to avoid them altogether. Gum disease is another common problem, one that can cause teeth to loosen and eventually fall out. Fortunately, it too is highly preventable. If you want to keep your teeth and gums healthy and looking great, even as you age, you just need to make smart decisions about how you care for your smile!
Daily Dental Hygiene Is Crucial to Your Smile’s Health
You probably already know that you need to brush your teeth at least twice a day, but do you understand why that act is so crucial to sustained oral health? More importantly, do you consistently follow through with brushing morning and night, and are you using proper technique?
- Tooth brushing should take approximately two minutes, involve only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, and gentle motions. You should brush every tooth, front and back. The tongue can also be gently brushed, to help remove harmful (and bad breath-causing) bacteria.
- Flossing is equally important, yet often overlooked. To learn proper flossing technique, or to help teach it to your children, visit the American Dental Association’s website or Youtube page, where there are many helpful instructional videos.
- If you can, consider brushing your teeth a third time each day, after lunch. If this is not an option chewing a piece of sugar-free gum can help create plaque-fighting saliva. Simply drinking water after every meal can also help.
- Just keep in mind that dental appointments are also necessary to keeping the teeth and gums healthy and cavity-free.
