If You’re Not Flossing Regularly, Your Gums Could Be Suffering: Part One

It is estimated that Americans spend approximately $2 billion a year on products like toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash. Unfortunately, people regularly fail to buy or use the amount of floss required to properly keep their teeth clean between cleanings. While the vast majority of people say they brush their teeth every night before bed, less commit to brushing each morning, and far fewer say they floss everyday. In fact, some studies indicate that more than 30 percent of American adults admit to never flossing, and only 30 percent say they floss every single day. That helps to explain why a staggering 75 percent of Americans are likely suffering from some degree of periodontal disease, commonly called gum disease. Not only is gum disease responsible for chronic bad breath, and inflamed, discolored and irritated gums that bleed easily, it is also the leading cause of adult tooth loss. So clearly, it’s time Americans start taking their gum health more seriously, and one way to take better preventive care of your gum tissue is to start flossing regularly.

What are the benefits of flossing?

While brushing helps to clean the surface of your teeth, it is not able to reach between teeth where bacteria are prone to hide out and multiply. Flossing helps to remove these bacteria before they can calcify into tartar buildup, which can then only be removed through a professional cleaning. Regular flossing can also help to improve the overall appearance of the smile, by limiting the unsightly plaque buildup, and can keep the breath fresher as well.

In some cases, especially if gingivitis is present, a periodontal cleaning may be necessary to help improve the oral health.
