Do you ever wonder if your smile is as healthy as it should be? Are you curious if there are effective ways to help prevent dental problems? Maybe you have been wondering if the changes you have noticed in your teeth or gums are sure signs of trouble? If you have questions about how to care for your smile or determine if there is a problem, the good news it that a dentist can help address those questions, and he or she can give you helpful advice about how to keep your teeth and gums healthy!
Can Cavities Be Prevented?
While cavities are incredibly common, that does not mean that it is impossible to effectively prevent them. Daily dental hygiene and routine dental visits are essential to helping keep the teeth healthy and free of cavities.
A healthy diet can also help, though. By limiting how much sugar you consume, eating plenty of nutrient rich foods like fruits and vegetables, and drinking adequate water, you can also help protect your oral health.
Remember, dental hygiene should include at least twice daily brushing and daily flossing. Skipping out on either of these steps increases your risk of developing cavities.
How Do I Know If I Have Gum Disease?
Many people do not realize just how common gum disease is, or how to best prevent it. Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss, and it is both a serious threat to one’s oral health and his or her overall wellbeing. Fortunately, gum disease is often preventable through proper dental hygiene, routine preventive care, and a healthy diet.
Some of the warning signs of gum disease include red or purple gums (healthy gum tissue is light pink in color), inflamed or irritated gums, and gums that bleed easily, for instance during flossing.
If you do notice any of these symptoms, you should schedule a dental checkup and cleaning as soon as possible. In some cases, a thorough cleaning may be all that is needed to restore the gums’ health. For more progressed cases, periodontal therapy may be necessary.
