Has your morning cup of coffee been causing you discomfort, lately ? Have you recently given up your habit of indulging in an after dinner dessert due to dental sensitivity or even downright pain? If so, you could be struggling with a cavity. Cavities are far from uncommon. In fact, some studies indicate that nearly 90 percent of American adults will experience cavities, and nearly half of school-aged children will struggle with cavities as well. Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken to prevent dental decay. There are also ways a restorative dentist can help treat any existing cavities, so you can get back to enjoying your life, without pesky dental discomfort getting in the way.
How Can You Determine If You Have a Cavity?
Though not everyone experiences noticeable symptoms, upon development of a cavity, there are often warning signs that a cavity is beginning to form. Decay reaches the point of being diagnosed as a cavity when the more sensitive layer beneath the teeth’s enamel has become exposed. This layer, the dentin, is not as strong as the enamel, which is why heightened sensitivity is one of several possible warning signs that you have developed a cavity.
Other common symptoms of a cavity can include:
- Grey or dark lines
- White patches on one or several of the teeth, which could indicate the enamel has worn away
- Sensitivity, especially to hot or cold foods or drinks
- Discomfort or pain, especially when eating foods with high contents of sugar or acidity
Keep in mind that seeking prompt treatment, if you notice any of these symptoms, is one of the best ways to prevent infection, or the need for an extraction.
