Will you soon excitedly embark on a host of epic summer adventures? If so, it would be all too easy to lose sight of some of your goals for the year, while out exploring the world. Even if your summer vacation will mostly entail staying close to home, soaking up time spent outdoors barbecuing with friends or lounging poolside, the laidback nature of summer schedules can still make it easy to lose sight of key health goals. If you want to maintain a healthy smile this summer and beyond, though, it is important that you care for your smile throughout these busy and exciting summer months. That way you can continue smiling proudly and comfortably long after your vacation ends!
1. Don’t Forget That Your Diet and What You Drink Affect Your Dental Health
You may already realize that avoiding sugar is important to maintaining great oral health, namely preventing the development of cavities and gum disease. Both these conditions are generally caused by an abundance of plaque buildup, which creates acidic erosion and inflammation in the gums.
However, many people don’t realize that what they do choose to eat matters as much as avoiding overly sugary foods and drinks. That is because the smile, like the rest of the body, requires nutrients in order to remain healthy. It is best to eat a diet that consists largely of fresh vegetables and fruits, with lean proteins and healthy fats for added nutrients. Over the summer, it can be especially helpful to eat fruits and vegetables that are high in water content, to help keep you comfortable and hydrated as the days heat up.
Drinking plenty of water is also essential to both your body and your oral health. Keep in mind that you may need to drink more than the generally recommended eight glasses a day, depending on your weight and how much time you are spending being active and/or outside, where you are more likely to perspire.
A healthy diet isn’t the only way you can help prevent dental problems, but it certainly helps set you up to enjoy good oral health.
