Who doesn’t want a beautiful and healthy smile? Just as importantly, most people want to prevent dental cavities, gum disease and other oral health issues, which can cause a host of subsequent problems for the smile, including irritation, discomfort and eventually tooth loss. Fortunately preventive dental care is not complicated or difficult. It just takes a commitment to taking simple steps, to keep both the teeth and the gums healthy.
2. Hygiene Needs to Include More than Just Tooth Brushing
Most children learn from an early age that they need to brush their teeth at least twice a day. Unfortunately the vast majority of people fail to follow their preventive dentists’ other advice, to floss at least once a day. Flossing is just as important as tooth brushing, because it serves a separate and important purpose, to remove the food particles and bacteria that fall between teeth where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Yet some studies indicate as few as 30 percent of adults actually floss their teeth regularly.
To avoid cavities, and especially gum disease, it is important to commit to flossing the teeth regularly!
3. Dental Checkups Are Required for Maintaining Healthy Smiles
Though most people realize that dentists recommend scheduling dental checkups at least twice a year, many think these visits are only actually necessary if the smile shows signs of decay or other oral health threats. Unfortunately this leads many people to skipping out on dental exams and cleanings that are actually necessary for keeping plaque bacteria at bay, and effectively preventing issues like cavities and gum disease from developing.
If you want to preserve your oral health, be sure to visit the dentist regularly, and summer is a great time to schedule your next checkup!
