Keep Calm And Smile On with Preventive Dentistry: Part Two

Want to stop worrying about your smile, and start actively taking better care of it? If so, you may have already taken steps to improve your dental hygiene routine, at-home. But do you wonder what more you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy? If so, your preventive dentist can be a great help, in making sure your smile remains both healthy and beautiful.

The Role Your Diet Plays in Dental Health

A healthy diet gives your smile and body the nutrients they need to stay strong. Healthy foods like fruits and vegetables also offer the benefit of being lower in sugar than most processed foods. Since plaque bacteria feed on sugar, the more sugar you eat and drink, the more likely you are to develop cavities. Too much sugar can also increase your chances of developing gum disease. Avoid many dental problems by eating nutrient-rich foods, and avoiding anything with significant amounts of added sugar. According to the American Heart Association, adult males should eat no more than 9 teaspoons of added sugar a day, and adult women should limit their intake to 6 teaspoons of added sugar (this does not include the naturally occurring sugars found in many fruits, vegetables, dairy products, etc.).

There’s No Need to Fear Preventive Checkups and Cleanings

Some people think that dental visits are only necessary when they are already suffering from a dental issue, like a cavity. Unfortunately this myth can actually lead to an increased risk of developing problems with the teeth and gums, because preventive checkups are also essential to maintaining oral health.

You should not wait until you are already experiencing symptoms of a dental problem to visit the dentist. Instead, you should schedule regular appointments for checkups and cleanings, which allows the dentist to remove tartar buildup and check for potential problems.
