If you are looking for a way to teach your kids about the significance of the Holocaust, there is a poignant exhibit on display now at the Holocaust Museum of Houston. “Taking Flight: The Butterfly Project,” began more than 20 years ago as a lesson plan in a single school. It has since grown into a global movement, which has inspired children and adults from nearly every continent across the world to remember the lives lost in the Holocaust, as well as to educate children about “the dangers of hatred, prejudice and apathy.”
The Inspiring Project That Has Changed the World
Since The Butterfly Project’s humble beginning, in 1995, schools from all over the world have become involved in the movement, helping to reach the goal of creating 1.5 million butterflies, each representing one of the children who died in the Holocaust.
Artist and photographer Syd Moen has curated the current exhibit, in Houston, which is on display with her own photograph, “little planet,” serving as a backdrop. There will also be displays throughout Houston, in honor of the 20th Anniversary of the project.
You can visit the exhibit at HMH from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, or noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
General admission to the Holocaust Museum Houston is $12, but children can enter for free, including college students with a valid college ID.
The HMH is located at 5401 Caroline St. Houston, Texas, 77004. For more information about this and other exhibits, you can visit the museum’s website at www.hmh.org or call 713.942.8000.
