Keep Your Gums Healthy with Periodontal Cleanings: Part One

Most people think about their teeth when they think of healthy smiles. That is likely because they’re the most important feature, cosmetically, and the one a person is most likely to notice about him or herself and others. But teeth are only one part of the smile. The gums are equally important, to both the structure and health of the smile. Since they serve just as vital of a role in one’s oral health, it is important to give the gums the same attention and care one does his or her teeth. Regular hygiene is important, but so are routine dental cleanings. For patients struggling with gum disease, frequent periodontal cleanings may be necessary as well.

Gum Disease Is Progressive

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. When detected during this early stage, the symptoms of gum disease can generally be reversed. However, once a patient has developed gum disease at any stage it becomes increasingly important to care for the gums, routinely, lest the symptoms worsen.

Common early signs of gum disease include inflammation and irritation, deep red or purple tones (healthy gums should be light pink), and gums that bleed easily, particularly while flossing. Chronic bad breath can be another indicator of gum disease.

If these symptoms are present (or if it has been more than six months since one’s last dental checkup), it is important for a person to schedule a dental appointment. It’s possible that a simple dental cleaning to remove tartar buildup, can restore the oral health. For patients whose gingivitis has progressed, however, more extensive treatment may be required.
